Worthing Remembrance motion withdrawn ahead of council meeting
A motion calling on Worthing Borough Council to support people’s right to choose how they mark Remembrance, including wearing different coloured poppies, has been withdrawn ahead of a full council meeting.
The motion, proposed by councillor Hilary Schan and seconded by councillor Debbie Woudman, had been due to be considered on Tuesday, October 20.
However, a statement issued by councillor Lionel Harman said the motion had been withdrawn following discussions between councillors and a commitment to work collaboratively on shared issues.
Cllr Harman said the decision meant that ‘rather than engaging in a potentially divisive debate within the Council Chamber’ the councillors involved would meet with Mark Carlisle, chairman of the Worthing Veterans’ Association, to discuss their views and seek common ground.

Cllr Harman added: “We welcome the decision to withdraw the motion and appreciate the willingness of fellow councillors to engage in constructive dialogue. Working with Mark Carlisle, we were able to present a strong case outlining our concerns, and we are pleased that this has resulted in an opportunity for further discussion rather than division.
“Our priority has always been to represent the views of residents whilst ensuring that Council business is conducted respectfully and collaboratively. We now look forward to meeting with the councillors involved next week to discuss our respective positions and explore how we can move forward together.”
He also thanked other political group leaders across the council for their support and engagement in the process.
Cllr Harman said: “The support shown by other group leaders demonstrates that, despite political differences, councillors can come together when it matters most. Collaborative working is essential if we are to achieve the best outcomes for Worthing residents.
“By listening to one another and working constructively, we can focus on the issues that really matter to our community.”
The motion had called on the council to stand by people’s right to wear a red or different-coloured poppy, both or neither, without judgement. It also recognised the impact of conflict on people living in Worthing, including refugees and people seeking sanctuary.
