Lewes MP questions minister on value of neighbourhood plans

Lewes' MP has pressed the planning minister on the need to defend neighbourhood plans following challenges to adopted plans in Newick and Ringmer.

Neighbourhood plans were introduced in the Localism Act and are designed to allow communities to have a greater say in development, and once agreed site alongside district-wide planning frameworks.

In the House of Commons this week, Maria Caulfield asked Brandon Lewis to ensure that the value and integrity of neighbourhood plans are upheld in the planning process.

Mr Lewis confirmed that the primacy of neighbourhood plans should be maintained and that the implications for planning permissions should be respected.

Ms Caulfield said: “My constituents are very concerned when they spend hours of their time and in making an effort to create a truly representative neighbourhood approach to development to then find that time after time developers seek to undermine the plan and challenge it at every turn.

“It is important that neighbourhood plans are upheld and their integrity maintained. I was pleased to hear the minister confirm this.”
