During a recent visit to Pevensey, Kieran met with local campaigners to discuss concerns about road safety and the impact of heavy traffic on the area’s historic buildings.

The petition calls on East Sussex County Council to introduce a 20mph speed limit and HGV weight restrictions along the B2191, from Pevensey High Street at its junction with Wallsend Road, along Castle Road, to Westham High Street at its junction with Eastbourne Road.

Residents have raised concerns about speeding vehicles, pedestrian safety and the impact of vibrations from heavy traffic on historic buildings, including those around Pevensey Castle.

The campaign is being supported by Pevensey and Westham Parish Councils, alongside The Mint House, English Heritage and local county and district councillors.

Dr Kieran Mullan MP said: “It was good to meet local campaigners in Pevensey and hear more about their concerns.

“People are understandably worried about the speed and size of vehicles travelling through the village, particularly with pedestrians, schoolchildren and visitors using these roads.

“Pevensey also has a fantastic history, and we need to make sure its historic buildings are properly protected.

“I’m pleased to support the petition and hope East Sussex County Council will give these concerns serious consideration.”

Councillor Peter Lowton, Chairman of Pevensey Parish Council said: “Pevensey and Westham are suffering from more and more traffic. There are not only a lot of speeding cars, but also too many HGVs causing damage to our nation’s heritage.

“East Sussex County Council needs to act now to prevent more damage to our historic buildings, including the Tudor wall paintings in the Mint House and the 1,700-year-old walls of Pevensey Castle.

“I am very grateful for Kieran Mullan’s support. Let’s hope ESCC also listens to local people.”

The petition is calling for action to improve safety for residents and visitors while helping to protect the area’s historic character.
