Pupils at newstudio schoolhelp charity

STUDENTS from Rye’s new Studio School wowed crowds at Rye Market and around Rye last Thursday to raise money for charity and promote a local business.

The students sprang a surprise flashmob performance on shoppers as part of a new government scheme which aims to get kids involved in their local communities.

They were raising money for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.

They worked hard performing at the market and then outside the George in the High Street, and outside Budgens before giving an afternoon performance to Rye College students.

Sixteen year-old music and drama student Sophie McGinness said: “We had been rehearsing our routine for a couple of weeks, and we’ve had to organise venues, outfits and charity buckets.

“It was a very worthy cause.”

Bosses at the Rye Harbour Health Club, who have provided cash for the group’s T-shirts and rehearsal space, said “Its great to see youngsters using their own initiative - we are more than happy to help.”

Gym manager Mike Chapman added: “This will be a big boost to Rye, we are a small community here and I’m sure people will appreciate it. Its great to see the girls working together and I’m sure it will give them a great sense of achievement.”

The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a government organised scheme to help teenagers develop their business and communication skills in their local areas.

The Studio School is based on the Rye College campus but students use a variety of venues around Rye including Rye Community Centre and Rye Art Gallery.

It is the first Studio School to be established in the South East.
