Rye’s Wild Boar Week setto serve some tasty fayre

RYE’S historic Mermaid Inn will be among local restaurants to serve up some special dishes for Wild Boar Week.

The popular annual food festival which gets underway on Saturday October 26.

The Mermaid Inn have a Carpaccio of Wild Boar Fillet, cured in house, with pears poached in Biddenden Cider as one of their starters and as one of their mains, a delicious Wild Boar Casserole.

There is a cooking demonstration on Sunday November 3 where head chef Kyle Tatner will be cooking two of their Wild Boar dishes and answering questions.

David Barrow and Mike Pepler will be hosting Wild Boar Woodland Tours during both weekends of the event. Participants will be shown the boar’s habitat and more information can be found on wildboar.org.uk.

There will be a Wild Boar Hog Hunt for the children who will be looking in shop windows for the names of hidden Wild Boar in exchange for a chocolate bar at the Rye Tourist Information Centre. Other Children’s activities are being organised by the WACOR project at the Rye Castle Museum.

On Tuesday October 29, the George is hosting a Medieval Banquet; ‘Smugglers Tales’ will entertain the guests, re-living the story of the notorious Hawkhurst Gang of smugglers, who during the mid 18th Century terrorised the Rye area.

There is live music throughout the week at a number of local venues

The artwork for this year’s event has been designed by local artist Matt Hardman and a signed limited edition print is available to buy for just £10 from the Apothecary Coffee House on East Street and the Mint Arcade in The Mint.
