Sail on down the line in Rye Harbour

As work progresses on Rye Harbour Sailing Club's new shower block, an invitation has been extended for prospective sailors of all ages to dip their toes in the water at the first free '˜taster sail' of the season next Saturday (March 11).

Rye Harbour Sailing Club’s (RHSC) vision is to make sailing a sport for all and the club’s Commodore, Caroline Wylson says in order to do this a range of improvements had to be made. “The construction of the new shower block is well underway,” she said. “A few days ago, Tolletts, the contractors, began work on the roof and the joists started to be fitted into place. The construction of the access ramp, that will give people with disabilities access to the clubhouse facilities, will soon be completed.

“Thank you everyone who has been supporting RHSC Club Development Project; Sport England, Icklesham Parish Council, Rye Town Council, Rother District Council, Little Cheyne Court Wind Farm, The Rye Fund, Sussex Community Foundation, Local Businesses, RHSC members, friends and families as well as members of the public.

“Without your help we couldn’t modernise the sailing club and by doing so we envisage a sailing venue that’s accessible for everyone.”

Anyone fancying a life on the ocean waves has the opportunity to have a go at sailing at monthly taster sails which RHSC are offering from Saturday, March 11 until the end of the sailing season in October.

Caroline said: “Whether you have joined the club and want to gain some confidence on the water or just want to have a go why not come along and join us and have a go at sailing a dinghy? We look forward to meeting you.”

Those interested in having a go are asked to arrive for registration at RHSC, The Point, Rye Harbour at 9.45am. You will be kitted out with a buoyancy aid. The advice is to be sure to wear warm clothes.

Taster sails are free but donations towards RHSC’s development project are appreciated.

After the taster sails the bar will be open and food will be available to purchase from the BBQ.

If the weather is not suitable for sailing the day won’t be a complete washout as there will be the chance to cover some theory work in the clubhouse with the help of Royal Yachting Associations videos.

RHSC continue to hold Friday and Saturday evening social events at the club. The next event is on Friday, March 17 when they celebrate St Patrick’s Day with a special dinner at £10 per person to mark the occasion. The menu is Irish Stew followed by Black Velvet Cup Cakes with Baileys Ice Cream. There will also be a chance to find ‘the pot of gold’!
