Steyning Jazz Club
New to Steyning Jazz Club, Sam Braysher brings his quartet, plus vocalist Annie Majin, to Steyning, on Friday, August 7.
Spokesman Colin Jilks said: “Sam is an alto saxophonist whose inquisitive approach to harmony is attracting growing attention on the British jazz scene as well as receiving international critical acclaim for his recent albums. Sam has a remarkably distinctive sound; warm and subtle, expressive and thoughtful, with an approach to improvisation that combines melodic beauty with rhythmic deftness.
“The quartet, together with vocalist Annie Majin, will be exploring the work of Kurt Weill, a composer who lies at the intersection of European classical music, jazz, opera and American musical theatre. Expect to hear classic songs such as My Ship and September Song in addition to hidden gems from the American Songbook.
“Annie Majin is a rising star of London’s thriving jazz scene, fresh from her West End musical theatre debut, revealing her powerfully captivating voice seemingly inspired by singers such as Barbara Streisand, Blossom Dearie and the sounds of classic Broadway shows. Her profound interpretations of standards and captivating stage presence create a connection with audiences that is effortless and inspiring,
“Sam and Annie are supported by an all-star rhythm section, with Hungarian pianist Matyas Gayer; award-winning bassist, Tom Farmer; and ultra-swinging drummer Steve Brown.
“Matyas Gayer was a finalist twice in the Montreux Jazz Piano Competition. He blends classical training with classic American jazz. Tom Farmer is an acclaimed British jazz bassist and composer who originally studied bass at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Steve Brown has become one of the most sought-after drummers in the country; since studying in New York in the early 1990s, he has worked with almost every major British artist as well as many visiting American musicians.”
