She received a round of applause as she walked into the hall at the count in Horntye Park Sports Complex.

Speaking to the Observer, she said: “It’s too close to call. We have been campaigning solidly for the last three to three-and-a-half years and one of the things I am proud of is having got so many new volunteers to work with our experienced team, who have campaigned on issues that matter to people here in Hastings and Rye.”

Meanwhile Conservative candidate Amber Rudd said she was ‘confident’ that her campaign had gone well.
