Bexhill town centre roadworks finish as new zebra crossing divides opinion

A new, wider zebra crossing in Bexhill town centre has been completed as part of major roadworks.

East Sussex Highways started the work in Sea Road, Endwell Road and Jameson Road on June 22 and finished it on August 7.

It involved relocating and widening the previous zebra crossing in Sea Road, close to Endwell Road near the station.

East Sussex Highways added the work also included carriageway resurfacing, footway reconstruction and drainage improvements.

Observer readers had mixed reactions to the newly relocated zebra crossing in Sea Road, commenting on our Facebook pages.

One said: “Its previous position was a real problem, particularly during the winter evenings. When approaching the crossing, the lights from vehicles waiting in the station car park blinded you and in poor weather was even worse.

“Better lighting would have helped pedestrians be seen and I really hope this solves the problem. I know I am not the only one who has encountered a problem as a driver or pedestrian.”

Another said: “I think it’s to accommodate the hundreds of kids from St Richard’s. Much safer.”

One resident said: “If it was a safety issue, then that's good. There are many places that need improvement. Little Common is very bad; the roundabout and roads (there) are very dodgy and bad for the school and pedestrians.”

However some branded the change a 'waste of money'.

One said: “Bexhill just does not have the pavement traffic to warrant a bigger zebra crossing. I could understand if 100+ people were waiting to cross the road at once. So why? Just why?”

Another said: “So what was wrong with the original one, which had been there for over 40 years?”

One resident asked: “More important than repairing potholes?”

A spokesperson for East Sussex Highways said the works were carried out to improve 'visibility at the crossing and creating a safer, more accessible environment for people using Sea Road'.
