The update comes after weeks of disruption for residents, businesses and motorists, with Stockbridge Road closed while essential gas infrastructure improvements are carried out.

In a statement, West Sussex Highways said: "While it may appear that there is little activity on site, engineers are currently connecting the new gas main to individual properties. This involves completing each service connection and carrying out meter checks to ensure properties are safely receiving a gas supply.

"Thank you for your patience while these essential works are completed. We will continue to provide updates as the project progresses."

The works on Stockbridge Road are being carried out by gas network operator SGN as part of a programme to replace ageing metal gas pipes with modern plastic pipework.

The replacement scheme was launched after concerns about the condition of the existing infrastructure, which had experienced a number of emergency gas leaks.

The Stockbridge Road closure has had a significant impact on traffic in and around Chichester, with motorists facing disruption on surrounding roads and alternative routes.

The works have also prompted questions from residents about traffic management and the length of time the road has remained closed.

Stockbridge Road is currently expected to remain closed until November 27.

Once the Stockbridge Road works are completed, SGN is also due to move on to the next phase of its programme on Birdham Road, where further work is planned between The Meadows and Strides Court, with temporary traffic lights expected to be used.

West Sussex Highways and SGN have thanked residents and motorists for their patience while the essential infrastructure improvements are completed.
