"Traffic lights are also in place at this junction and a diversion route is clearly signposted.

“Our engineers have worked as quickly and as safely as possible and have completed the repair.

"We are now in the process of reinstating the road and will need to keep the closure in place to give the new surface time to set.”

The roadworks have reportedly caused major delays to traffic.

SGN said it will reopen the road by Thursday, October 22, ‘barring any unforeseen circumstances’.

The company added: “We’re sorry for any disruption this emergency work may have caused, and we appreciate people’s patience and understanding.”
