THE build up to remembrance Sunday began in earnest on Monday with the opening of the garden of remembrance outside Worthing Town Hall.

Ex-servicemen, sea cadets, relatives of fallen heroes and town dignitaries attended the service led by Reverend Brian Penfold from St George’s Church, in St George’s Road, East Worthing.

Former councillor and ex-serviceman Tom Wye said: “The weather wasn’t very kind but it was kind enough to stop raining in the service. It was a very poignant little service. The mayor and youth mayor laid the poppy crosses. From now on people can add their crosses when they want to. There was certainly some very personal crosses laid after the service.”
