Udimore

Richard Holmes, Beauchamps

Congratulations to Bert and Mary Goldsmith, who recently celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary (and duly received a beautiful card from Her Majesty)! Congratulations too to them on both celebrating their 90th birthdays! I was lucky to hear this news by happening to call on them (and finding them in very good form) soon after these auspicious events. Please do remember that I can’t include important Udimore news like this in Village Voice unless someone tells me (please make a careful note of my phone number, 01797 223055, and email address, [email protected] , and please keep the news coming in)

The Jumble Sale in St Mary’s Community Hall on Saturday seems to have gone very well, though not attracting quite such a large crowd of shoppers as the last one. Nan Hacking is nevertheless very grateful to all of you who did come, and to all of you who donated goods for sale. You’ll be glad to know that anything that remained unsold at the end of the morning has been passed on to deserving local charities, Chernobyl Children Rye and Emmaus among them. Nan is also very grateful to her team of helpers, without whose hard work the sale wouldn’t have been the success it was.

The Brede and Udimore Overseas Group tea party in the Hall on Sunday also went very well. Despite showery weather, during the course of the afternoon some fifty supporters enjoyed their cups of tea, the quizzes and crosswords and the fine array of sandwiches, cakes and biscuits provided by committee members. Together with previous donations, the event raised over £300 for the five missionary charities currently supported by the group. Liz Turgoose would like to thank the committee for their invaluable help, and all of you who came along.

Tomorrow, Saturday, the Friends of St Mary’s look forward to welcoming lots of you to another tea party in the Hall. Starting at 3pm prompt, Dickie Dengate will be giving us a lighthearted talk about his experiences during a lifetime of fruit farming both in this country and in Uganda. Committee members will then be serving tea and a selection of the delicious cakes for which they’re now quite famous. This should be a very enjoyable occasion, well worth the entry price of £5. Funds previously raised by the Friends at events like this have been put to good use recently: a handsome new kissing gate at the western entry of the churchyard, a new door to the boiler room, a new sheet of safety glass to protect the beautiful “Sower” window, a handrail for the steep steps up to the organ loft, and several other improvements in the vestry.
