'Turning into a major event' - Vehicles 'abandoned' amid heavy snowfall in Brighton and Hove; A27 collision reported

Vehicles have reportedly been 'abandoned' amid heavy snowfall in Brighton and Hove – with a collision also reported on the A27.

Videos on social media show cars struggling due to the snow this afternoon (Wednesday, January 8).

Sussex photographer Eddie Mitchell is out and about in the Brighton and Hove area. He reported that the roads are ‘getting really bad’ – with major delays on the A27.

He wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Turning into a major event [in Hove] – cars and lorries being abandoned. Worthing and Eastbourne have rain.”

AA Traffic News provided more information about the A27 incident.

A traffic notice read: “Road closed and queueing traffic due to stalled vehicle, crash, two vehicles involved and snow on B2123 The Drove both ways between Warren Road and A27 Falmer Hill (Falmer / Rottingdean Junction). Road has become impassable due to heavy snow.”

The A2038 is reportedly ‘impassable’ due to snow both ways between A27 (Hove turn off) and Court Farm Road.

Brighton and Hove City Council wrote on X: “Have you seen the snow?

“A yellow warning for snow is in place so please look out for yourself and others.

"Our gritting teams will be out gritting the roads on major routes this evening. Remember, gritting doesn’t guarantee no ice!

“Take care Brighton & Hove.”
