Snow arrives in Sussex amid Met Office yellow warning: In pictures

Traffic chaos has been reported in parts of Sussex after snow arrived in the county amid a yellow warning by the Met Office.

The white stuff hit the county around 2.30pm on Wednesday (January 8) – with videos emerging from Devil’s Dyke in East Sussex and the West Sussex area, including Wick, Littlehampton. It has also been snowing in Brighton, Crawley and Chichester.

Snow is particularly heavy in Brighton and Hove.

Vehicles have reportedly been 'abandoned' – with a collision also reported on the A27. Gridlock has been reported on roads across the area.

Videos on social media show cars struggling due to the snow.

A Brighton and Hove City Council statement on social media read: “Have you seen the snow? A yellow warning for snow is in place so please look out for yourself and others.

“Our gritting teams will be out gritting the roads on major routes this evening. Remember, gritting doesn’t guarantee no ice!”

The Met Office warned that a weather system is ‘likely to push sleet and snow into some southern counties’ of England – ‘bringing possible disruption’ on Wednesday (January 8).

This yellow warning, in place until 11.59pm, was issued after an amber cold health alert was extended for the South East.

Met Office chief forecaster, Jason Kelly, said the situation was ‘being closely monitored’ on Tuesday, adding: "Currently, a snow warning is in place, but it is not guaranteed. The situation is being closely monitored. As the forecast is finely balanced, do stay up to date with the latest forecast for your area.”

Residents in Sussex and Surrey were told to expect heavy rain and ‘sleet showers’.

Rain, which has so far been mostly light, has started to get heavier – with flood alerts and warnings still in place.

This was the forecast by location

Horsham – Heavy rain at 3pm. Sleet showers at 4pm, 5pm and 7pm.

Crawley – Sleet showers to begin at 2pm and will continue until 9pm.

Worthing – Heavy rain at 2pm until 3pm and again at 6pm.

Chichester – Heavy rain from 2pm until 6pm..

Eastbourne – Heavy rain from 1pm until 3pm. And again at 7pm.

Hastings – Heavy rain from 2pm until 4pm. And again at 7pm until 8pm

Brighton – Heavy rain from 2pm until 3pm. And again at 7pm until 8pm.

Sleet showers are expected to arrive in Surrey from 4pm.

The latest London & South East England weather forecast reads: “A cold day on Wednesday. Cloud thickening during the morning, with outbreaks of rain and snow for most parts through the afternoon. Some snow accumulations. Perhaps turning drier across some western areas in the evening. Maximum temperature three degrees Celsius.”

The Met Office added on X (formerly Twitter): “Another cold afternoon with snow, sleet and rain across southern England and the snow settling in places.”

If it does snow, it ‘may cause’ reduced visibility and make roads slippery – ‘increasing the chance of accidents’, the Met Office said.

Some roads and railways are ‘likely to be affected by snow’, with longer journey times as a result.

In the UK, there are 85 Environment Agency flood warnings – meaning flooding is expected. There are 156 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible’.
