Worthing exhibition will explore Sussex folklore

Another Sussex offers a new exhibition, the culmination of two years working with more than 600 people from Worthing to Hastings, exploring local folklore as a theme.

It will open at Worthing Museum with the re-opening of the museum itself after a 12-month closure for refurbishment.

Spokesman David Parker said: “Our exhibition includes some large-scale collaborative pieces alongside individual responses from our studio group.”

It comes from Figment Arts and is funded by Arts Council England and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, running from Saturday, March 28 until June 21. There will be a Midsummer Open Event on June 18 from 6pm-7.30pm with singing, storytelling and celebration.

“Artists from Figment Arts Studio, and over 580 workshop participants, have responded to stories about local legends of Sussex folklore, such as the Knucker Dragon of Lyminster, the Midsummer Oak and the spectral hounds of Sussex.

“This year is the 20th anniversary of the saving of the Midsummer Oak, the Worthing tree where skeletons are said to dance at Midsummer’s eve. We’ll be telling this story and others as part of our exhibition.

“We’ve been researching these stories and the places they come from, exploring related museum collections in Newhaven, Worthing and Hastings. Through large-scale collaborative paintings and individual artworks, these tales have been reimagined and reinterpreted, offering fresh, contemporary perspectives on local heritage.

“The artwork includes paintings, textiles, installation, animation and illustration.

“We’re excited to be opening our exhibition at the same time that Worthing Museum reopens its doors after 12 months due to essential works to connect the building to the Worthing Heat Network.”

Figment artists are Debbie, Yvonne, Kirsty, Sarah, Will, David, Jake, Richard, Charlotte, Sam, Eliph and Colin.

“In this exhibition you will see large collaborative paintings on the wall as well as individual artist pieces around the space. There are animations, audio work, textiles, stained glass and a ghostly installation. There is a space to relax, with some books about folklore which audiences are free to browse. We are also showing work by Sarah Pain and her Hagstone Project.”

“Figment Arts works with people to make art that reflects their lives and communities.

We build strong relationships in the places we work, helping people share their stories, be creative and feel proud of where they live.

“Our work gives a voice to those who are often left out and helps bring people together through the arts. In May 2023 we won the Brighton Fringe Award for our Artists Open House A Room Of Our Own. In May 2025 our Story Shed was part of SMARTsheds, a unique, immersive art exhibition located in a former pig farm at Devil's Dyke, which won the prestigious Brighton Fringe Exhibition Award 2025.”
