Brighton's Conference League opponents make shock turnaround just days before Madrid clash
Conference League: Getafe vs Brighton and Hove Albion - Thursday, 8pm
Getafe recorded a rare win in the La Liga ahead of their Conference League clash with Brighton.
The Madrid based team were in the middle of a poor run and had dropped into the relegation zone ahead of Sunday’s 3-1 home win against Sevilla.
It was looking grim for Getafe boss Jose Bordalas as Sevilla went 1-0 up at the Estadio Coliseum but late goals from Enes Unal, Martin Satriano and Orel Mangala sealed the win and lifted them up to a more respectable 12th place.
Bordalas' team have also struggled in the Conference League with just one point from their first two fixtures. They drew 1-1 at Romanian outfit Cralova and then suffered a painful 5-2 home loss to Swiss club Lugano to leave them 30th in the table.
Bordalas: this is the way forward
“The team showed a very good side," said Getafe boss Bordalas after the Sevilla win. “This is the way forward.
"I've told the players that this has to be the example of what needs to be done in every match.”
Brighton will arrive in Madrid on a high after their 1-0 win against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
The Seagulls are third in the Premier League after none matches and are the leading scorers in the division.
Fabian Hurzeler's men are ninth in the Conference League table having beaten Lithuanian team Kauno Zalgiris 4-0, followed by an away 0-0 draw in the Czech Republic at Jablonec.
Brighton eye first Europe away win
Brighton will hope to get their first away win of Europe's third tier competition on Thursday. Hurzeler is expected to make a number of changes to his starting XI as they have a tricky Premier League clash against an impressive Brentford team on Sunday at the Amex Stadium.
“The only thing that we are focused on at the moment is that we are in a big process,” said Hurzeler after the win at Manchester City. “We are in a process where we go home now, analyse the game.
“Ty to take the right things out of the game, try to analyse it and make it better. And then try to prepare well for Getafe, because that's another big challenge ahead of us in the Conference League and Europe, different games.
“So we have to be there on our highest level. It will be a different game and therefore we only try to go from game to game.”
Brighton's pre-Getafe press conference will be on Wednesday evening in Madrid.
