Fabian Hurzeler: Brighton boss says Manchester City were 'lucky' in Carabao Cup

All the reaction from Brighton’s painful Carabao Cup loss at Manchester City

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler said Manchester City were “lucky” on Wednesday and plans “revenge” in the Premier League this Saturday.

The Seagulls suffered a painful penalty shootout loss to Enzo Maresca’s City after it finished 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Twice Albion took the lead through Malick Yalcouye and Georginio but the hosts hit back with goals from Mateo Kovacic and Vitor Reis .

Brighton even led in the shootout as Jason Steel saved from Kovacic before City’s back-up goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli made two saves from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk.

Hurzeler: City had cup luck

City, who are the Carabao Cup holders, ultimately won 4-3 on spot-kicks to reach the quarter-finals.

Brighton, who made seven changes themselves, will return to the Etihad in the Premier League on Saturday.

Manager Fabian Hurzeler said: “We lost in a shoot-out. We had enough chances to win the game but the goals we conceded were very unlucky.

“They had the luck today. We have to reset. We have a great chance on Saturday to take revenge.

“We will never blame players who miss chances or miss penalties. It is a team sport and we stick together. I saw a team who tried hard and a team who gave everything, also out of possession.”

Maresca happy with rotation

Maresca had no regrets about his decision to rest Erling Haaland, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Ruben Dias, Elliot Anderson and Josko Gvardiol after giving them brief holidays.

He said: “I was happy with the way we planned the game, with the rotation, and especially I was very, very, very happy with the ones that were playing.”

Maresca, who made nine changes, praised Donnarumma’s deputy Rulli.

He said: “Apart from the penalties, I think overall he was good, especially in the build-up. He also made a good save.”
