Eastbourne Borough back on track with win at Three Bridges

Back to business: Eastbourne Borough shook off their weekend FA Cup defeat at Salisbury with a winning Isthmian Premier trip to Three Bridges on Tuesday night.

A 2-0 victory, with a goal in each half, saw the Sports consolidate their sixth place in the table, six points behind leaders Enfield, but with at least one game in hand over each of the five clubs above them.

Bridges meanwhile, in their first season at this level, remain stuck in the relegation places.

Steve King made four changes to the side which exited the FA Cup at Salisbury: wide man Kai Corbett returned after a three-match injury, Max Sheaf took a midfield shirt, and there was a first Borough start for seasoned striker Paul McCallum - who had been cup-tied for the Salisbury trip. Finally, skipper Elliott Johnson was fit again to reclaim the captain's armband.

And Borough were swift to take control at a misty Jubilee Field, with a fourth-minute goal by Josh Rees, pounding through on to a Corbett pass and taking his shot early to beat the Bridges keeper at his near post.

After that, play was pretty even but with the Sports largely in control. Home striker Leighton had a 16th minute sight of goal, but keeper Lewis Carey was out swiftly to smother the chance.

Then Freddie Carter fancied a sortie in attack - and which central defender doesn't! - but after cutting in with some impressively neat footwork, Freddie only found the side netting.

Both sides swapped half-chances, but we reached half-time with the Sports still a goal up.The second half followed a similar pattern until the 70th minute, when Corbett celebrated his return with a superb fizzing finish for 2-0, after great work by Egbri to set him up.

There was no way back for Bridges, and Borough saw out the game quite comfortably.

King’s side now go to Leatherhead in the FA Trophy on Saturday – when Bridge go to Dartford in the same competition.
