Pagham beat neighbours Selsey to make Peter Bentley Cup progress
Pagham booked their place in the next round of the Peter Bentley Cup with a hard-fought 2–0 victory over neighbours Selsey at Nyetimber Lane.
The match began at a lively pace, with both sides attacking during an end-to-end opening. Pagham created the first clear opportunity inside 10 minutes when Siph Mdlalose fired narrowly wide.
Mdlalose did not have to wait much longer for another chance. In the 19th minute, the forward found the bottom corner to give Pagham a deserved 1–0 lead.
The hosts immediately went searching for a second. Kaleem Haitham tried his luck but sent his effort over the crossbar, before play was paused in the 25th minute after Mdlalose suffered a head injury.

The stoppage allowed both teams to take on water and receive instructions on a humid evening on the south coast.
Selsey attempted to find a route back into the contest, but they were repeatedly frustrated by a strong and well-organised Pagham defensive line. Toby Pointing produced one particularly important challenge to prevent Selsey Dan Simmonds from getting a shot away.
At the other end, Tom Jefkins passed up a huge opportunity to double Pagham’s advantage when he fired over. Kaleem then delivered a dangerous free-kick into the area, although the Selsey goalkeeper gathered comfortably.
Pagham went close again shortly before the interval when Lewis Rustell unleashed a powerful effort, forcing the visiting goalkeeper into an excellent save down by his post.

The Lions therefore entered half-time with a narrow 1–0 advantage, leaving everything to play for in the second half.
Pagham began the second period on the front foot, with Kieran Jones taking the first shot after the restart. Jones was then brought down by Archie Scott, earning the home side a freekick in a promising position.
Kaleem’s delivery was initially blocked by some determined Selsey defending. The ball eventually returned to the Pagham man, but his follow-up shot travelled wide of the post.
Mdlalose soon found himself through on goal with an opportunity to make it 2–0. The Selsey goalkeeper stood tall, spread himself well and made a fine save to keep his team in the cup tie.
Jones continued to provide energy for the hosts, chasing down a long pass and turning what appeared to be a lost cause into a Pagham corner.
With around 15 minutes remaining, Jack Robert Roy Newhouse replaced goalscorer Mdlalose as Pagham introduced fresh legs in attack. The substitute quickly became involved, sending his first attempt into the side-netting.
The closing stages remained tense and competitive. Selsey pushed forward in search of an equaliser, while Pagham defended their slender advantage with determination. A late Selsey free-kick was delivered into the area, but the home defence stood firm and headed the danger away.
Pagham finally made the victory safe when a fantastic cross from the right was converted by Lewis Russell, sealing a 2–0 win and sending the Lions through to the next round.
It was an enjoyable cup tie played in a competitive spirit, with Pagham’s disciplined defending and clinical finishing ultimately earning them both progression in the Peter Bentley Cup and the local bragging rights.
