'When the right one comes along, the business will be done' - Crawley Town have vital position to fill, but Kazim-Richards won't be rushed
When you look at Crawley Town’s squad so far this summer - there is one position obviously lacking in depth.
By our count, there are 11 defenders - with some of whom can play in midfield - eight midfielders and three strikers.
But there is only one goalkeeper, and that is 38-year-old player coach Vito Mannone. And putting his age in there is not to his detriment, we all know what happened with Glenn Morris, right?
Head coach Colin Kazim-Richards has goalkeepers on his radar but he is not going to rush into signing anywhere and hopes the club learn from past mistakes.
“We don't want to talk about the past too much, but the past is relative. I keep telling people, history is not history”, he said.335
“History is your present, because it kind of tells you where you do want to be or you don't want to be. So it's very logical to speak about that, what we've done in the past.
“I think where we've gone wrong in the past, in my opinion, I believe that we've signed players just because we need them, we’ve said ‘let's just do this. We need a goalkeeper or whoever it might be. We need a striker, so let's just sign this’.
“For me, it has to be the right one. So when the right one comes along, the business will be done.”
And Kazim-Richards is excited to have ex-Arsenal and Sunderland stopper Mannone on board.
He said: “I think if you ask anybody now, here, any other players, if you just have a normal conversation, maybe not on camera, they will tell you the confidence and the trust and the belief they have in him is immense.
“His work rate, his attention to detail is something that is of the highest standard. So it has to be someone that is the right person, has the right ability, has the right output, because Vito will be directly in charge of that person. And it's a standard that you have to be willing to push and meet.”
