Wick aim for FA Cup run after losing start in league

Wick FC aim to create their own slice of FA Cup history on Sunday when they entertain Camberley Town in an extra preliminary round tie at Bognor (2pm).

The Rocks’ Nyewood Lane home has staged multiple Cup games between the non-league club and Football League opposition, the most memorable being when Swansea side containing Dean Saunders were beaten in a replay.

The Krooners, who are in the Combined Counties Services Premier Division, are hardly the same level but the Dragons will be taking a decent scalp if they advance.

“The FA Cup is magical, especially for people from my era, and to be playing in the competition at Bognor on a Sunday afternoon when there’s little other football around is something to savour,” said Wick manager Lee Baldwin.

“There will be a lot of friends and family coming to watch the game and it’s down to us to make sure we do everything we can to reach the next round.”

The Dragons lost their first Southern Combination League Premier match of the season when they were beaten 5-1 at Eastbourne United but Baldwin was far from despondent.

He added: “It’s easy to talk after a game about what your team should or shouldn’t have have done but sometimes you have to give respect to your opponents and I thought Eastbourne United were really good against us.

“They were aggressive in both boxes, worked really hard, have signed some top-end players and it showed. You have to tip your hat, we made a few horrific mistakes but they made it a difficult afternoon.”

Elsewhere in the SCFL Premier, Lancing lost 1-0 at home to Seaford. The Lancers host SE Dons in the FA Cup on Sunday.
