Joel began his career as a staff nurse in the intensive care and surgical department at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation in 2012, before working his way up to Deputy Ward Manager in 2017 and subsequently to Surgical Ward Manager. He transitioned to the care home industry in 2019 as head of care in a nursing home, before joining Care UK in 2022. He has been at the helm of Ayton House since the home’s opening two years ago.

The judges recognised Joel’s belief in creating a warm, open team culture that encourages professional development and constant learning. He invests time in coaching others, recognising potential and providing opportunities for team members to build their confidence.

Since the home’s opening, Joel has ensured residents’ care and wellbeing are prioritised. The judges were pleased to hear that Joel appointed a resident ambassador who meets with Joel to discuss ideas and events that will benefit the residents.

He said: “Residents sit at the heart of our home. It is important to learn about every resident's past and present life. From their clinical needs to their favourite food, past life experiences and hobbies, everything is essential to create truly person-centred care.

Over the past 18 months, Joel has strived for excellence in all areas. Ayton House has been rated 9.9 on carehome.com, achieved a Veteran Friendly Framework accreditation, and created strong links with the community such as fundraising for Kent and Sussex Air Ambulance together with the Resident Ambassador and donating books to local schools.

Commenting on his success, Joel said: “I am humbled to be recognised among the many talented Home Managers, but this award is not just for me, it is a whole team approach promoting a meaningful lifestyle and enhancing residents’ wellbeing while also being passionate at improving the care given to the residents at Ayton House.”

Georgina Stocker, Regional Director at Care UK, said: “We are all delighted that Joel has been acknowledged for his hard work – it’s so well-deserved and a testament to his commitment and dedication.

“Joel is hugely deserving of this win. He goes above and beyond to continuously improve residents' wellbeing, ensuring they live happy and fulfilling lives, as well as encouraging his team to further their learning and development. We are so pleased that the judges saw that too!”
