Burgess Hill 4s produced a determined and disciplined team performance to secure a hard-earned 1-0 victory over a strong Hailsham 3s side in an entertaining and closely contested match.

The game was evenly balanced throughout much of the first half, with both teams creating attacking opportunities and moving the ball well. Burgess Hill looked dangerous going forward through the combination of Cath Donovan, Becs Marriner and Sabine Rowan, while Hailsham continually tested the home side with their pace and movement. As the game developed, Burgess Hill enjoyed several promising attacking spells of their own, forcing Hailsham onto the back foot and demonstrating plenty of attacking intent.

Behind them, the midfield unit of Gillian Branagan, Jo Richardson, Debs Scott and Toni Frier worked tirelessly to ensure Burgess Hill remained competitive in the middle of the pitch. Branagan had an outstanding game in the centre, repeatedly breaking up Hailsham attacks and distributing the ball intelligently into attacking areas. Scott worked relentlessly across the pitch, competing strongly for every loose ball and providing support in both attack and defence. Richardson provided calmness and composure whenever Burgess Hill were in possession, helping her side maintain shape and move the ball effectively, while Frier's energy and determination helped drive the team forward and disrupt Hailsham's rhythm.

At the other end of the pitch, Burgess Hill's defence produced an outstanding display. Sarah Bailey was tireless on the right-hand side, combining strong defensive work with energetic forward runs to support attacks before tracking back quickly to close down danger. On the left, Lucy Fox was rock solid throughout, producing a series of crucial clearances from inside the D and denying Hailsham attackers the opportunity to test the goalkeeper. Sweeping behind the defensive line, Wendy Caddye was calm and composed, reading the game superbly and consistently clearing danger before it developed into genuine opportunities. In the centre, Ali Gillham delivered an exceptional performance, producing a number of powerful and accurate clearances that bypassed the Hailsham midfield and found Burgess Hill's attackers, turning defence into attack with a single hit.

Also playing a vital role was goalkeeper Grace Mortimer, who communicated well with her defence throughout and showed great bravery coming off her line on several occasions to clear danger before Hailsham could capitalise.

The breakthrough came towards the end of the first half following an excellent team move. Branagan won possession in midfield and played a perfectly weighted pass to Marriner at the top of the D. Marriner showed great awareness to move the ball on to Donovan on the right side of the circle. Driving forward and facing the goalkeeper one-on-one, Donovan kept her composure before producing a perfectly timed slip pass across the face of goal. The move caught the goalkeeper off guard and found Rowan waiting unmarked at the left post, where she calmly guided the ball into the corner to give Burgess Hill a deserved 1-0 lead.

The second half proved even more challenging. Hailsham emerged determined to find an equaliser and increasingly applied pressure as the game wore on. Matters became even more difficult for Burgess Hill when Branagan was forced to leave the game midway through the half, leaving the side without a substitute. With Frier having sustained an earlier injury that limited her movement, the team had to dig deep physically and mentally to protect their advantage.

As Hailsham pushed forward, Burgess Hill showed tremendous resilience. Every player contributed, tracking back, making tackles and working for one another as Hailsham searched relentlessly for a way back into the contest.

The final stages of the game were particularly tense. Hailsham were awarded two consecutive short corners in the final two minutes, creating the best opportunities of the match to snatch a late equaliser. However, Burgess Hill defended superbly, with players charging out quickly, sticks down and bodies behind the ball to deny the initial strikes on goal.

The biggest moment of all came in the closing seconds. A lifted effort from Hailsham looked destined to find the net, but Mortimer reacted brilliantly, getting her pads to the ball and producing a vital save. Fox was quickest to react to the loose ball, clearing the danger and helping preserve Burgess Hill's slender lead.

After several nervous moments, the final whistle brought relief and celebration for the Burgess Hill side. Against a strong and determined Hailsham team, Burgess Hill had matched their opponents going forward, taken their chance when it came, and then shown outstanding character to defend their lead under immense late pressure.

While Rowan's goal ultimately secured the victory, this was very much a team performance. From the attacking pressure of Donovan, Marriner and Rowan, to the tireless efforts of the midfield and the heroic defensive display led by Bailey, Gilham, Fox, Caddye and Mortimer, every player played their part in a memorable and well-deserved 1-0 win.
