Organised by Hailsham Bonfire Society, this year’s event marked the 21st anniversary of the Society’s reformation in 2005, celebrating more than two decades of dedication to preserving one of Hailsham’s most cherished traditions.

Spectators lined the route to watch the torch-lit procession make its way through the town, before crowds gathered at Western Road Recreation Ground for the ceremonial bonfire and much-anticipated firework display. The evening’s programme also featured the Society’s largest-ever effigy at the recreation ground, providing a striking centrepiece for the celebrations.

The event welcomed five visiting bonfire societies from Lewes, reaffirming the strong connections between Sussex’s bonfire communities and adding to the atmosphere of the occasion.

Beyond the spectacle, the celebrations once again demonstrated the importance of Bonfire as a community event, bringing together residents, families, visitors and volunteers in a shared celebration of local heritage. Street collections during the evening supported this year’s nominated charities, Out of the Blue and Parkinson’s UK Hailsham Branch.

Town Mayor Cllr Chris Bryant, who also serves as Captain of the War Memorial for Hailsham Bonfire Society, said: “It was wonderful to see Hailsham come alive for Bonfire once again. The enthusiasm of the crowds and the commitment shown by everyone involved are a real testament to the strength of our community and the importance of keeping these traditions alive. The event gives people of all ages an opportunity to come together, celebrate our town’s identity and support worthwhile causes.”

Town Councillor Dave Chapman, Honorary Vice President of Hailsham Bonfire Society, said: “An event of this scale takes an enormous amount of planning, teamwork and dedication, and the finished result is something the whole town can be proud of. My thanks go to the Society’s members, volunteers, visiting societies and everyone who helped make the evening possible. Their hard work ensures that Hailsham’s Bonfire tradition continues to thrive for future generations.”

Cllr Anne Marie Ricketts, Chair of Hailsham Town Council’s Communities Committee, said: “Bonfire is a powerful reminder of what makes Hailsham special: a shared history, a strong community and people willing to give their time to bring something memorable to the town. It was particularly encouraging to see the links with other Sussex bonfire societies celebrated alongside the support shown for local charitable causes.”

Hailsham Town Council would like to thank Hailsham Bonfire Society, the visiting societies, volunteers, emergency services, event personnel, local businesses and members of the public whose cooperation and support helped make the celebrations possible.

The annual event remains a significant date in Hailsham’s calendar, combining longstanding customs with a strong sense of community pride and charitable giving.
