Since taking office in May 2025, the Mayor of Hailsham, Cllr Chris Bryant, has spent much of his time meeting local charities, voluntary organisations, community groups and dedicated individuals whose work helps make Hailsham a thriving place to live.

Through attending civic functions, fundraising events and community celebrations, the Mayor has gained a deeper appreciation of the breadth of activity taking place across the town and the commitment of those who give their time to support others.
Cllr Bryant said: "One of the most rewarding aspects of being Mayor has been discovering just how much goes on behind the scenes to keep our community connected. From small volunteer-led groups to long-established organisations, there are so many people quietly making a difference, often without seeking recognition or reward.
"These encounters have shown me that a strong community isn't simply about where we live. It's about the people who step forward, support their neighbours, organise activities, raise money for good causes and create opportunities for others. Hailsham is fortunate to have so many people who care deeply about the town and its residents."
Among the organisations the Mayor has visited and celebrated are Hailsham Bonfire Society, Hailsham Choral Society, the Royal British Legion Hailsham & District Branch, Hailsham Photographic Society, Hailsham Festival Committee, Hailsham Railway Club and the Hailsham & District Twinning Association. Each contributes in its own way to the town's cultural life, heritage, community connections and wider profile.
The Mayor has also recognised the practical work carried out by groups supporting residents' everyday needs. Environment Hailsham helps keep the town looking attractive through its floral displays, planters, flower beds and hanging baskets, while Cuckmere Buses provides an important transport link for residents across Hailsham and surrounding villages, particularly those who may have limited alternatives.
Cllr Bryant said: "The difference these organisations make can be seen throughout the town. Whether it's brightening our streets, helping people get where they need to go or bringing residents together through shared interests, their contribution goes far beyond the individual activities they organise. They help create a town where people feel involved and supported."
The Mayor has also praised the work of Hailsham Lions, whose fundraising supports people facing hardship, and the Charles Hunt Centre, where staff and volunteers provide valuable services and social opportunities for older residents.
He highlighted Hailsham Youth Service's longstanding contribution to younger members of the community, providing activities, guidance and opportunities for personal development outside school hours. The service's move to larger premises in Western Road in 2024 has helped create further opportunities to support local young people.
"Every stage of life brings different needs, and it's encouraging to see so many local organisations responding to them," Cllr Bryant added. "From activities for young people to support for older residents and assistance for those experiencing difficulties, these services strengthen our community and help people feel less isolated."
As his mayoral year continues, Cllr Bryant hopes to meet more of the individuals and groups working across Hailsham and encourage residents to recognise the value of volunteering and community participation.
He concluded: "My time as Mayor has given me the privilege of meeting people whose dedication is genuinely inspiring. I would encourage anyone who has considered volunteering or becoming involved with a local group to take that first step. Every contribution matters, and the combined efforts of our residents are what make Hailsham such a special place.”
