Established in January 2025, the Railway Club has become an important meeting place for residents aged 55 and over, offering friendship, companionship and a regular opportunity to connect with others in a relaxed and supportive setting.

The club meets every Wednesday between 10am and 1pm on the lower floor of the Station Youth Centre in Western Road. Sessions are free, with voluntary contributions towards refreshments appreciated.

From friendly games and quizzes to competitions, guest speakers, barbecues, picnics and sing-along film screenings, the Railway Club offers a varied programme designed to bring people together and encourage participation. Above all, it provides a welcoming environment where members can form friendships, enjoy shared experiences and feel more connected to their local community.

With numbers continuing to grow, the organisers are now hoping to recruit more volunteers to help support the club during its weekly sessions.

No specialist experience or qualifications are needed - just a friendly approach and a willingness to help. Tasks may include greeting newcomers, spending time chatting with members, preparing and serving refreshments, supporting activities and helping tidy the venue at the end of the morning.

There is flexibility around the time volunteers can offer, with opportunities to help regularly or on an occasional basis. Even a small contribution can make a meaningful difference, helping to ensure that members continue to receive a warm welcome and have plenty of opportunities to socialise.

The venue is fully accessible and accommodates wheelchair users and people with mobility scooters, helping to ensure the club remains open and inclusive to all.

Councillor Anne Marie Ricketts, Chair of the Town Council's Communities Committee and co-organiser of the project, said: "The Railway Club demonstrates just how valuable a regular social gathering can be. It's about giving people somewhere to go, someone to talk to and something to look forward to each week. The friendships that have developed since the club began show what a positive difference this kind of community initiative can make."

"We'd love to hear from anyone who could spare a little time to help us. You don't need to have volunteered before or have any particular skills – being approachable, happy to chat and willing to lend a hand is what matters most. It's a chance to meet people, be part of a friendly team and help make Hailsham an even more welcoming place to live."

Project co-organiser Councillor Anne Blake-Coggins added: "It's been fantastic to see the Railway Club develop into such a valued part of the community. Every week, people come together to enjoy one another's company, try different activities and build connections that extend beyond the sessions themselves."

"As the club continues to attract more people, additional volunteers would help us maintain that welcoming atmosphere and offer members the best possible experience. Whether you're helping with refreshments, joining in a game or simply taking the time to talk to someone, your contribution can have a real impact. Volunteering is also a great way to meet others and feel more involved in the local community."

Anyone interested in volunteering at the Railway Club, or wishing to find out more about the role, is encouraged to make contact by emailing [email protected] or calling 07837 208877.
