The council has gone out to tender to appoint a contractor to develop the detailed design, known as RIBA Stage 3. This work will include further site investigations and develop the technical design, to prepare the plans for a planning application expected in summer 2027.

The proposed centre would bring two existing GP practices together into one new purpose-built, modern facility, and increase the capacity of primary care services in Hailsham and the surrounding areas.

NHS Sussex Integrated Care Board has identified Hailsham as a priority location for new primary care facilities because its growing and aging population, is increasing demand for GP services. Wealden District Council is working with the NHS Sussex Integrated Care Board and local health partners to help deliver an accessible, modern medical centre that meets current and future healthcare needs.

A concept design has been completed for a new three-storey centre. The design includes 30 consulting rooms, reception and waiting areas, clinical and office space, meeting rooms and staff facilities. It would also include accessible public toilets and a larger Changing Places toilet for people who need additional space and equipment.

Councillor Kelvin Williams, Alliance for Wealden (Liberal Democrat) and lead councillor for Public Health and Asset Management, said, “Delivering a new medical centre at Reef Way is an important commitment to the people of Hailsham. As the town has grown, existing GP practices have faced increased pressure on their services, and their current buildings have limited space to expand. This purpose-built centre would increase capacity for GP appointments and treatment, improve accessibility for patients and provide modern facilities that support the long-term health needs of Hailsham’s growing and ageing population. We have remained determined to move the project forward despite the significant financial and construction challenges it has faced.”
