Rye continued their unbeaten start to the league in front of a bumper home crowd. The game was a memorial to long term Rye coach and supporter Jim Buttery and started with an impeccably observed emotional minutes silence. Players from Rye, Bromley and the Rye 2nd XV came together to acknowledge the influence of a Rye legend. The perfect calm and quiet of this moment didn’t last though as Rye started with real ferocity. From the first scrun of the game the ball was moved quickly by Jackson Harvey and centre Pete Bicknell ran though a shellshocked defence to open the scoring. Harvey added the two easily. Rye were unstoppable at this point and a loose Bromley kick was well managed easily and this time Bicknell was the provider with a deft offload to Josh Emberson. There was no respite for the visitors. Solly Cooke started and ended the next try. His deft take of the kick off worked through the hands of Chris Cordeux and George Sims before Cooke regained the ball and left the opposition full-back floundering with an outrageous goose step. Harvey converted the well worked try. The set piece was dominant throughout with props Tom Husk and Charlie Clark showing no quarter. A scrum won against the head created the next try with Bicknell running a smart line to saunter under the posts. Harvey again converted. As the game wore on the pack became hugely influential, from another secure scrum Fin McCabe hit a lovely line and his perfectly timed pass put Josh Emberson over in the corner. Harvey converting from the tightest of angles. Emberson swiftly added his third with perfect timing of an intercept that gave him a relatively easy stroll home. Harvey kept up his record with another deft kick. The second half started with more destructive work at the set piece and a sumptuous reverse pass by Harvey to give Bicknell a third as he skated through a flat footed defence. Bicknell’s fourth came from his partner in points Emberson as he offloaded the ball after a sweet kick and chase, the centre running home again. Bromley looked punch-drunk at this point and had no counter to Rye’s power and pace. The backs combined perfectly and this time it was Dylan Vetara who stepped his way from a stationary defence. Harvey again with the points. By this stage everything Rye did came off. Another huge scrum saw McCabe throw an outrageous dummy and bump of his opposite number to get under the posts. Inevitably the skipper added the extras. The parade of tries came to an end with Will Nunn coming off the bench to skirt the defence and tap down for Harvey to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Despite there being time on the clock the ref ended the game early bringing an end to Bromley’s difficult day.

Head coach David Wiggins was happy but measured in his response “Another impressive win against a spirited Bromley side. We played to our strengths and that made us hard to stop. We can’t be complacent though. We face Old Colfs next week who are unbeaten and will be a huge test “

All 18 squad members made a significant impact with the try scoring machines Bicknell and Emberson collecting seven between them. However, the player of the match award was given to the granite like Clark who anchored the dominant scrum throughout. Rye continue their league campaign with an away trip to similarly unbeaten Old Colfeians.
