Pupils at Langney Primary Academy have paid tribute to local war hero Flying Officer Percy Burton with the creation of a commemorative mural, supported by local housebuilders Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes.

As part of the project, pupils welcomed Richard Goldsmith from Hailsham Historical Society, who also runs the Hailsham Museum, for an engaging educational session exploring the Second World War and the Battle of Britain.
During the morning, pupils learned about the experiences of those who lived through the war, before hearing about the remarkable bravery of local hero Flying Officer Percy Burton.
Aged just 23, Flying Officer Burton lost his life during the Battle of Britain when his Hurricane aircraft crashed into a tree near Hailsham after he rammed an enemy German aircraft. In 2025, a permanent memorial was unveiled at the site of the tree at the Cuckoo Fields housing development, following a partnership between Barratt Homes, Hailsham Town Council and Wealden District Council.
Inspired by Burton's courage and sacrifice, the pupils worked together to design and create a striking commemorative mural, celebrating his legacy and paying tribute to those who gave their lives during the war.
The initiative was inspired by Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes as part of their commitment to the Hailsham community, helping younger generations discover the area's rich history while encouraging creativity, learning and remembrance.
Michelle Pollard, Senior Teaching Assistant at Langney Primary Academy said: "The children absolutely loved learning about the Second World War and Percy's story. They were amazed the story was so local and worked as a team to incorporate all the elements of Percy’s life in a really vibrant piece of work they are all very proud of.
"Thank you to Richard for his continued support and expertise, and to the Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes team for asking us to take part. The mural will go in our Remembrance area at school so all of our pupils, staff, parents and visitors will know Percy’s story.”
Phil Hurring, Marketing Manager at Barratt Redrow Southern Counties, said: "Percy's legacy has been an important part of our work in Hailsham at Cuckoo Fields. We're committed to honouring his sacrifice for our country by keeping his memory alive.
"It's fantastic to see the enthusiasm they brought to designing the mural and remembering his story. They've created a wonderful tribute to a local hero, and we're proud to have played a part in helping them celebrate his story."
