Sage House, the independent dementia charity based in Tangmere, near Chichester, has welcomed Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s announcement of a £48 million partnership to speed up dementia research. At the same time, the charity is reminding people that families in West Sussex living with dementia need support right now.

The funding, made up of £33 million from the Government plus contributions from industry partners, will support The BARBARA Alliance. The Alliance was set up in memory of Dame Barbara Windsor and works to remove barriers to clinical trials and speed up the development of new treatments.
Emma Radley, CEO of Sage House, said: “Sage House welcomes Andy Burnham’s announcement of a £48 million partnership supporting The BARBARA Alliance’s work to accelerate dementia research and develop new treatments. For everyone affected by dementia, this progress offers much-needed hope.
“But while research looks to the future, people living with dementia and the families caring for them need support today.
“At Sage House, we see every day how compassionate, practical help can change lives. A diagnosis can bring uncertainty, anxiety and isolation. Having somewhere to turn, someone who listens and opportunities to stay connected can make a lasting difference.”
The charity’s services include:
Wayfinding, which offers free advice, guidance and emotional support to help people living with dementia and their families navigate what comes next
Activities that provide companionship and enjoyment
Day Breaks, a service that gives carers valuable time to rest and recharge
Community Outreach, which brings support closer to home for people who may struggle to reach Sage House
Emma added: “Together, these services help people feel supported, understood and less alone. Sadly, the need for our services is growing, and we need your help to meet the need so we can continue to support those who need it most.
“We share the ambition of The BARBARA Alliance. Research and better treatments are essential, and we hope a cure will one day be found. But until then, people living with dementia deserve the support they need to live as well as possible.”
