With the Sussex Christmas Tree Fling fast approaching, would-be champions are being urged to start practising their throwing technique and register for their chance to win.

The sixth annual Sussex Christmas Tree Flinging Championships take place at Catsfield Christmas Tree Farm, near Battle, on Saturday 7 November 2026. Competitors from across the South East are invited to see how far they can throw a Christmas tree, with spectators welcome to cheer them on.
Adult competitors should register now through Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/catsfield-christmas-tree-fling-tickets-2002511579039 and check in on arrival. Children and spectators do not need to register.

Catsfield Christmas Tree Farm owner Clive Collins said: “The countdown is on, so now is the time to start practising your throwing technique and get your name down. Whether you’re a returning competitor hoping to beat your best or a first-timer who fancies a go, we’d love to see you at Catsfield.
“The tree fling has become a much-loved part of our Christmas build-up. People take the competition seriously, but there’s also plenty of laughter and encouragement from the crowd. Register now, bring your supporters and see how far you can fling!”
Adult contestants will throw a six-foot Norway spruce. The men’s and women’s champions will each win £150 and a wooden trophy sponsored by Battle accountancy firm Holland Harper.
Children will throw smaller trees in two mixed categories: under-10s and under-16s. The winners will receive farm shop vouchers and trophies, also sponsored by Holland Harper.
There are some impressive distances to aim for. Last year’s women’s champion, Louise Thompson, achieved a throw of 5.65 metres, while men’s winner James Gardiner threw his tree 9.1 metres. Organisers are hoping to see even longer throws this year and that the 2024 women’s champion, Becky Palmer of St Leonard’s, will return to try to beat her 6.91 metre throw which was thought to be a world record for women.
Check-in opens at 12.30pm, with contestants asked to gather at 1.15pm. Children will compete from 1.30pm, followed by the women at 2pm and the men at approximately 2.30pm. Prize presentations are planned for 3pm.
The Christmas Edit will be open from 12.30pm until the contest finishes, offering Christmas decorations, lights and potted Christmas trees. The Waffle Wagon will serve waffles and hot drinks.
Competitors are advised to wear sturdy footwear and bring gloves to handle the spiky trees. Parking is limited, so visitors are encouraged to car share or arrange to be dropped off.
