Expert warns that parents are waiting too long to secure sought-after nurseries

The average waiting list for nurseries in the UK is 6-12 months, but brand new data from Nuuri found that the majority of parents are booking nursery viewings just 5 months or less from their desired start dates.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of parents return to work after maternity or paternity leave, and their babies begin their nursery journey.

But with baby room spots in high demand and availability limited, parents who leave their search too late risk facing fewer options - or none at all. Recent data from Nuuri, a fast growing nursery search and discovery platform, highlights that 65 per cent of parents are enquiring less than six months before their required start date.

However, with waiting lists in popular areas stretching from six months to a year, this is simply too late.

According to Nuuri’s platform statistics, the most popular time to book nursery tour slot is five months prior to their required start date - but in many areas this is still not an adequate time to secure their number one choice. In fact, while it may seem too early to start researching and looking for nurseries during pregnancy, Nuuri data shows that 17 per cent of soon-to-be parents are doing just that. Some waiting lists currently stand at over 12 months and it can be the best course of action.

Planning childcare well in advance can increase parents’ chances of securing a place at their preferred nursery. Steven Clarke, founder of Nuuri.co.uk, said that many nurseries have substantial waiting lists - and in particular, baby rooms get filled quickly. “As a dad myself, I've been through the process of searching for nurseries. If you leave it too late, you’re likely to be left with limited options, and could be forced to pick a nursery that wasn’t your first choice.

"Our data found that 17 per cent of parents submit enquiries and tour bookings prior to childbirth, meaning they can view options before the chaos of those early months and make the best decision for themselves and their child. “We recommend that expecting parents consider doing this - and if not, then they should definitely be trying to view options at least six months before they want to start. Securing your dream nursery is really important, so it’s worth starting early.”

Here's Nuuri.co.uk’s expert tips to consider when planning your baby's journey:

  • Start your search after the 20-week scan

The 20-week scan is a natural milestone, and a perfect time to start thinking and looking into childcare, as by this stage you generally have a clearer idea of your due date. You can also do this before your third trimester, which is usually when you may feel more tired and uncomfortable.

  • Work back from your return-to-work date.

Instead of focusing on when the baby is due, think about when you plan on going back to work and arrange nursery care to start a week or two before your first day back to work for ‘settling-in sessions’.

  • Funded hours

Checking your eligibility for funded childcare and understanding the application process early can help you plan ahead and avoid unnecessary stress later on. Visit the government website to check whether you qualify, find out when to apply, and even speak to your local council about any additional support or area-specific schemes available.

  • Be flexible with your days

If you can be flexible about which days your child attends, it can make finding a place much easier. Many nurseries fill up fast on popular days like Tuesdays to Thursdays, but often have more availability on quieter days such as Mondays and Fridays. Being open to days such as these can allow you to secure a place more swiftly.

  • Stay in touch

Joining a waiting list doesn't always mean you'll automatically receive a place by your preferred date. Some nurseries may ask you to contact them closer to the time, while others will contact families when spaces become available.

Nuuri describes Mid Sussex as a “popular family area with fast rail connections to London and Brighton, strong primary schools, parks, countryside and vibrant commuter towns.

"Nursery demand is high across all major towns and growing housing developments.”
