Parenting in Sussex: I’m hanging on by a thread

In my next life, maybe I should be a tortoise.

Because, at this point, the thought of sleeping through winter sounds quite appealing.

We’ve had a few false starts for spring. There have been a couple of days where the air has been warmer and you could comfortably leave the house without a coat.

And then, like this week, the temperature drops again and the wind is really biting. And even on days where the sun starts out by shining (like Sunday) there’s been yet more rain.

The morning seemed so full of promise, I hung my first load of washing of the year on the outside line. You guessed it, it didn’t fully dry because by 3pm an Arctic blast had returned, and by 5pm it was pouring.

It’s mid-March now. I feel like I’m permanently cold and soggy, and I don’t want to be any more. I need mild days, I need warmth, I need a break from this bleak monotony!

For me, more temperate weather means I can get out and do more things. I know it’s perfectly possible to be outside in winter, but for someone as perennially cold as me it just isn’t as enjoyable.

I want to be able to go for walks without my shoulders touching my ears as I brace against the wind, and without suffering my fingers hurting and turning white (thanks, Raynaud’s syndrome).

I want leisurely picnics, ball games in the park, barbecues, drinks on the beach with friends, really long strolls, National Trust days out, flowers in bloom, light and bright evenings…

In my humble opinion, the UK is at its finest in spring and summer, and after months of thinking I might need to invest in an arc the warmer seasons can’t come soon enough.

With just a week and a half of the school term left, I have my fingers firmly crossed that my family can start ticking some items off my mild-weather checklist off during the Easter holidays.

In other news, a belated happy Mother’s Day to all the mums and mum-figures out there. I hope the day was kind to you and you got a bit of time for relaxation.

I was treated to a lovely pair of earrings and enjoyed a couple of glasses of Prosecco to toast my raising of two little humans. Cheers, everyone!
