England World Cup success delighting Eastbourne pubs

A number of Eastbourne pubs are still celebrating successful World Cup watchalongs as England’s quarter-final against Norway looms this Saturday, July 11.

The Three Lions rewarded the weary fans who stayed up later than 4am on Monday morning with a thrilling 3-2 triumph over host nation Mexico in their capital.

Despite kick-off being delayed until 2am due to thunderstorms, the daunting altitude of the Azteca Stadium, and a red card to defender Jarell Quansah, Thomas Tuchel’s side booked their place in the last eight with one of their greatest ever results in the competition.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer had intervened last week, extending licensing hours to ensure pubs were able to stay open until 5am.

And pubs across Eastbourne grasped the opportunity to let fans flock in and create lifelong memories.

A spokesperson for the Hurst Arms in Willingdon Road said: “We wanted to make sure our customers had the best possible place to watch the match, so staying open all night was an easy decision.

“The pub was full, the atmosphere was brilliant, and the free bacon rolls at half-time went down a treat.

“It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying themselves and supporting England together.”

Charlie Haffenden, manager at Jesters Bar in Seaside Road, said: “The atmosphere was unbelievable. We were fully booked - we had to turn so many people away!

“The DJ got the crowd going with all the top England songs. It went so well [that] we were fully booked for the quarter-final in less than 24 hours!”

Kick-off is at 10pm on Saturday night, with the game being broadcast on ITV.
