Storm Chandra: Pebbly beach at Birling Gap becomes sandy due to storm

The usually pebbly at Birling Gap has become sandy due to heavy winds and waves following Storm Chandra hitting East Sussex.

A National Trust spokesperson said the typically pebbly beach at Birling Gap had been replaced by sand due to the ‘action of strong waves during storms and high tides’,

The spokesperson added. “The action of strong waves during storms and high tides can reveal sandy patches on the beach, which are usually covered by flint pebbles at other times of the year.

"This year has seen a higher than usual amount of sand appearing.

"We ask all visitors to take care when heading to the beach, check tide times in advance and to keep well away from the cliff base at all times.

"If you are visiting, enjoy it while you can but remember to stay well away from the base of the cliffs and keep an eye on the time.”

The Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning from midnight until 12pm on Tuesday (January 27).

This impacts West Sussex, East Sussex and Surrey.
