Worthing college students learn life skills through fire service course

Twelve students have completed a course of firefighter-style exercises to build confidence, resilience and valuable life skills.

IGNITE, a five-day course run by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (WSFRS), helps young people build personal resilience, improve their wellbeing, strengthen relationships and contribute positively to their communities.

Throughout the week, students took part in a varied programme of firefighter-simulated exercises and activities designed to support their social and emotional development.

Hands-on experiences such as hose-running drills, first aid training, communication exercises and team-building challenges helped equip participants with valuable life skills while boosting their confidence and self-belief.

A special pass-out parade was held at Lancing Fire Station on Friday, October 23 to celebrate the students’ achievements. The event was attended by proud family members and friends.

Assistant chief fire officer, Andy Piller, presented the students with their certificates.

He said: “It has been fantastic to see and hear about the progress these young people have made over the course of the week. They have stepped outside their comfort zones, supported one another through challenges and shown real determination and resilience.

“The confidence, teamwork and communication skills they have developed through IGNITE will serve them well in all aspects of their lives, and they should be extremely proud of everything they have achieved.

“On behalf of West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, I would like to congratulate each of them on completing the course and wish them every success for the future.”
