Emergency incidents and roadworks cause morning disruption across Sussex and Surrey

Here are the latest traffic updates from across Sussex and Surrey, on Wednesday morning (May 20).

Emergency services are at the scene of a collision between Petworth and Billingshurst, with part of the A272 closed.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said crews were called shortly before 8am to a road traffic collision.

In a statement posted on social media, the service said: “We are currently in attendance at a road traffic collision on the A272 Croucham Lane to Linfold Road, Kirdford. A road closure is in place. Please avoid the area.”

AA Traffic News earlier reported the A272 was partially closed in both directions between Crimbourne Lane and Linfold Road. Sussex Traffic Watch later said the route at Strood Green, west of Wisborough Green, was closed in both directions, as the emergency response continues.

The incident is one of several continuing to affect motorists across the region during the morning rush hour.

Temporary traffic lights linked to ongoing roadworks on the A21 at Hurst Green and north of Flimwell are continuing to cause delays in both locations.

Elsewhere, the A27 near Lewes has reopened following an earlier collision between the Ashcombe roundabout and Falmer. However, congestion remains in the area after one lane eastbound was blocked near the services earlier this morning.

Drivers are also continuing to face severe congestion on the A24 between Horsham and Worthing. Northbound delays of around 12 minutes are being reported between the A283 The Pike junction and the A24, with traffic moving at average speeds of around 5mph.

On the West Sussex / Surrey border, Meath Green Lane in Horley is still partially blocked in both directions near Webber Street after a crash reported earlier this morning.

Traffic is also heavy on the M25 clockwise, where multiple stretches are experiencing delays. The worst congestion is between the M23 at junction 7 and junction 8, where delays of around 14 minutes are building with average speeds of 20mph.

Further clockwise delays are being reported between junction 9 at Leatherhead and Cobham Services, as well as between Cobham and junction 11 at Chertsey.

Additional congestion is affecting the A3 northbound near Guildford between Forsyth Home Farm and Egerton Road, while eastbound traffic on the A31 Down Lane is slowing towards the A3 junction, with delays continuing to increase.

Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys throughout the morning as incidents and congestion continue across the region.

Motorists are being urged to avoid affected areas where possible and allow extra time for journeys while incidents remain ongoing.
