Daniel Edison, 17, was watching Vine perform his trademark one-liners during a Matt’s Comedy Club event at the Connaught Theatre, Union Place, when the star asked audience members what they did for a living.

Daniel’s brother Bradley, 23, told Vine his younger sibling wrote jokes — so the comedian pulled him up on stage.

Daniel said he had never been on stage before but he had the audience in stitches with his opening gag: “This morning I made my friend an offer of £10 to use his Stannah stairlift and he took me up on it.”

He followed that up with another of the 2,500 jokes he said he had written over the last two years: “I recently took a test to pilot for the Red Arrows, I passed with flying colours.”

When Vine, whose brother is BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine, reclaimed the microphone he put an arm around Daniel and said: “I know they were laughing, but you’ve ruined my night.”

Russ Bravo, who runs Matt’s Comedy Club, spoke to Daniel after the show and booked him to return as support for improv act The Noise Next Door.

He said: “He writes some genuinely funny stuff, and at only 17, has a bright future ahead of him – whether writing, performing or both – if he can keep gigging and learning, and honing his craft.”

Now the youngster is set to become a regular on the comedy circuit and has already made an appearance on a bill with Paul Kerensa, co-writer of TV shows Not Going Out and Miranda.

Daniel, who lives in Havant, is a big fan of Tim Vine and said: “The fact that people of all ages can go to his shows and not be offended is rare.”

He is also inspired by comedians such as Stewart Francis, Gary Delaney and Lee Mack.

“The idea I could make a career out of telling my jokes to people is amazing. That’s what I’m working towards,” he said.

“I’d like to carry on writing, keep doing gigs in front of fantastic audiences and get my name around. I’m also going to start using escalators, so onwards and upwards!”

Daniel’s appearance with Tim Vine has already had 1,457 hits on YouTube.
