Abraham on target again as Bognor Regis Town are first past the post at Ascot United

Timmy Abraham grabbed the winner as Bognor Regis Town chalked up a 2-1 victory at Ascot United to stay a point ahead of Jersey Bulls at the top of the league.

Teen attacker Lennie Smith gave the visitors the lead on eight minutes when he beat home keeper Hugh Scott. But Jaye Long brought United level at 1-1 after 25 minutes when he found a way past Tommy Scott.

Then Abraham, signed on a dual registration deal from Gosport Borough, notched his second league goal on the spin to put Bognor back in front. Danny Hollands’ men maintained their advantage and held on for the three points and finished the contest against 10 men when Jacob Wilson saw red on 84 minutes. He brought down substitute Louie Williams in the box and was dismissed before Ethan Robb saw the resultant spot kick easily saved. Central defender Liam Webber returned to the heart of the back four and did so alongside debutant Charlie Wassmer, the former Cambridge United and Crawley Town player coming in to the side after signing midweek. Hollands drafted the experienced Wassmer in after losing Fin Walsh-Smith to Havant & Waterlooville – and he enjoyed a winning start to his Bognor career. Assistant manager Ben Kneller had called for Rocks players to “get back on the horse” following the defeat last time out and he was pleased that they did, as he explained to the club’s official YouTube channel. He said: “After last weekend (the 3-1 loss away to Southall) you want to get back to winning ways as quickly as you can.

"We spoke a lot in the week with different bits of detail and it's difficult because you’ve got lads sat in the stand and they’re slowly coming back; but we started well with Lennie (Smith) very bright and they got back in the game; but the lads worked hard and we got one over the line.” Bognor Regis Town: 1 Tommy Scott; 2 Maadhav Jagota; 3 Ben Sheaf; 4 Charlie Wassmer; 5 Liam Webber; 6 Tommy Block (C); 7 Henry Nevill; 8 Ethan Robb; 9 Timi Abraham; 10 Kaya Tshaka; 11 Lennie Smith; Substitutes: 12 Luke Roberts Henry Nevill (54'); 14 Ben Anderson Tommy Block (74'); 15 Henry Mcdonald Maadhav Jagota (54'); 16 Josh Batt; 17 Louie Williams Timi Abraham (82').
