Fabian Hurzeler insists Brighton are trying to solve midfielder Yasin Ayari's contract situation.

Ayari, 22, has been a key man for Hurzeler since the German arrived and the Sweden international delivered another impressive performance last time out in the 1-1 draw against Leeds United.

Ayari's importance to Brighton also increased over the summer as the club sanctioned Carlos Baleba's £70m switch to Manchester United.

Ayari and the experienced Pascal Gross are currently Hurzeler's first choice midfield but concern over Ayari's contract remains.

It's widely reported that his current deal expires this summer but a source close the club told Sussex World today that Brighton do have an option for a further year. His contract runs until June 2027 and then Brighton can trigger the extra 12 months if they wish.

Despite this option, it is thought that talks continue with the former AIK man and his representatives on a new contract.

Hurzeler: Yasin is a great player

Hurzeler, speaking ahead of Sunday's trip to Coventry, said: "You always want to solve these things internally first before we go to the public. Generally, what I can say is that Yasin is a great player. He made a great development with us through the last two years.

"He has grown as a player and as a personality. He takes more responsibility. So I'm very pleased. I'm very happy to work with this kind of player. I'm very happy to work especially with him and hopefully he stays for a longer time."

Ayari arrived at Brighton in 2023 from AIK for around £6m and had loan spells at Blackburn and Sunday's opponents Coventry.

Ayari has grown as a personality

Hurzeler added: "Yasin, he has qualities in possession, he has qualities out of possession.

"He also has grown as a personality. So regarding taking ownership, he can contribute with his effort.

£I think it's very important that we understand that everyone in our squad has a responsibility for our achievements, and everyone is important, and that's what we always try to emphasise

"And then express yourself within your personality, within your quality, and that's also what I ask from Yasin."
