'He's the one' - Steve Sidwell picks his top four Brighton players this season
All the latest team news for Brighton and Hove Albion and across the Premier League
Former Brighton player Steve Sidwell believes the Seagulls are playing “the best football in the Premier League” so far this season.
Albion - who beat Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium last Saturday - are third in the standings and are the division’s top scorers with an impressive 24 goals from nine matches.
There have been a number of impressive individual displays and a few players have perhaps taken some Albion fans by surprise. Maxim De Cuyper for example has operated on the left flank and has impressed during the injury absence to Kaoru Mitoma.
The Belgian returned from the summer World Cup in tip-top condition and has four goals and four assists.
Diego Gomez has been tireless on the right flank and opened his account for the campaign with a memorable effort from the halfway against old rivals Crystal Palace.
The emergence of midfielder Malick Yalcouye has also been a real plus for Fabian Hurzler’s team as the young Ivory Coast star now has three goals this season and featured in every single fixture this term.
Kostoulas has grabbed his chance
But perhaps the most encouraging has been the form of Greek striker Charalampos Kostoulas. The 19-year-old has grabbed his opportunity this season with five goals and four assists.
Kostoulas is now the main man for Brighton in the Premier League and soften the blow of losing Danny Welbeck to Chelsea and kept Georginio Rutter on the bench.
Sidwell, speaking to Betway, said: “They just seem to unearth these talents time and time again, and they've been doing it for a long time now.
“De Cuyper has really impressed me, as have Yalcouye and Gomez in midfield, but Kostoulas has probably been the one for me.
“He's still only 19, but he's leading the line so well and has been scoring some great goals, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how he progresses.
“Vuskovic is another really exciting young player who's done really well since arriving from Spurs, and he's really settled in well next to Lewis Dunk, so it's exciting times down there."
Sidwell: Unbelievable from Brighton
Brighton, who have beaten the likes of Aston Villa, Arsenal and City this term, are juggling the demands of Premier League and Conference League football.
This Thursday they are in Madrid to take on La Liga club Getafe and are swiftly back in Premier League action on Sunday as they welcome Keith Andrews’ impressive Brentford team to the Amex Stadium.
Sidwell added: “Brighton had a tough start to the season on paper, but beating Arsenal convincingly and going to Manchester City and winning was seriously impressive, and I think they've scored the most goals in the league so far, so it's been an unbelievable start.
“Can they keep it going alongside all the European games too? We'll have to wait and see, but they've got some real quality in that squad, and they are undoubtedly playing the most exciting football in the Premier League at the moment.
“It won't be easy when the games start to mount up heading into Christmas, but Brighton are everybody's second team at the moment, so it would be great if they can stay up there challenging."
