Premier League issue official statement after Coventry vs Brighton incident
All the reaction from Brighton’s 5-0 Premier League win at Coventry City
One of the talking points from Brighton's 5-0 win at Coventry was the red card for Taiwo Awoniyi.
The home striker was dismissed in the 53 minute after he collided with Brighton's Belgian international Maxim De Cuyper.
Awoniyi was adjudged to have elbowed De Cuyper in the face and received a straight red card from match official Tony Harrington.
The decision was also reviewed by Video Assistant Referee Peter Bankes.
Checked and confirmed by VAR
The Premier League matchday centre posted: "#COVBHA – 53’. The referee’s call of red card to Awoniyi for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR.
AR1: “He has caught him in the face with his elbow”.
REF: “The final decision is red card for violent conduct”.
VAR: “There’s a movement. Confirming the on-field decision of red card for violent conduct”.
Brighton were already 2-0 up at the time thanks to goals from Charalampos Kostoulas and Malick Yalcouye.
A penalty from Pascal Gross, a long range stunner from Lewis Dunk and a fifth from Yasin Ayari sealed the win.
Brighton are fourth in the Premier League table with seven points from their first four matches of the new campaign. The Seagulls are also the highest scorers with 13 goals, which is impressive considering they sold last season’s leading scorer Danny Welbeck to Chelsea last summer.
Hurzeler: We have a desire to score
“What was positive is that we had this desire to score,” said head coach Fabian Hurzeler. “We had this hunger to keep going and that overall makes a good performance.
“But we also understand we have to be very humble and shouldn't take these things for granted. Understand it's about doing the basic things right, winning the personal duels, winning the second ball and keeping it simple in possession. Then we are a good football team.”
Hurzeler added: “I mentioned at the beginning of the season that it's not about having one good goalscorer. It's about having this flexibility of having many goalscorers, of having a lot of players who have the desire to score.
“And if you have the desire to score, then you can score from all different positions.
“So it's all about sacrificing things and making these runs into a box. I think that's also a mindset thing. Of course we were very efficient today. We were quite ruthless in the right moment in front of goal and that's a positive.”
