'That's just wrong' - Brighton player ratings at Manchester City as Seagulls pay the penalty

How the Albion players rated in the Carabao Cup at Manchester City

Brighton suffered a 4-3 penalty shoot-out loss to Manchester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk missed the decisive spot-kicks at the Etihad Stadium for the Seagulls after the match ended 2-2 on the night

Brighton deservedly took the lead in an entertaining clash on 30 minutes as Georginio's cross/shot was turned in by the impressive Malick Yalcouye for his third goal of the season.

City's leveller was perhaps against the run of play as a Phil Foden pass found Mateo Kovacic on edge of the box and his inch-perfect low shot found the bottom corner.

Georginio then gave Albion the lead on 47 minutes as the Frenchman fired home after Jaouen Hadjam’s assist but City scored a scruffy equaliser as Ryan Cherki’s free kick deflected off Vitor Reis.

Brighton will be disappointed to lose this one as they played well and created plenty of chances.

How the Brighton players rated

Jason Steele - 7: No chance with Kovacic's inch perfect leveller and the deflection of Ries decieved him for the second. Did well to save a Kovacic penalty in the shootout but little chance with the others.

Costinha - 6: A lively presence down the right flank and is proving his worth after his summer arrival. More valuable minutes in the tank for the Portuguese.

Michael Svoboda - 7 Received an early yellow card for a foul on the lively Rayan Cherki but defended well throughout. A very good addition to the squad and replaced by Lewis Dunk on 85 minutes

Olivier Boscagli - 8: A far better centre back than left back. Superb positional play and his distribution is as good as it gets

Hadjam - 7: Claimed an assist for Georginio's goal. The left back played the full 90 minutes and did well up against Phil Foden

Pascal Gross - 7: The 35-year-old starts again and arrowed a shot just wide on 29 minutes. Enjoyed a tussle with the City players and despatched his penalty well.

Yasin Ayari - 6: A moment of skill on 27 minutes when his flick across goal just eluded everyone. Tried a audacious long range effort that drifted just wide. Battled well throughout. His penalty was well saved by Rulli.

Diego Gomez - 6: A long range effort from 25 yards on 25 minutes forced a save from Rulli. A tireless shift and replaced by Minteh on 76 minutes.

Jack Hinshelwood - 6: More minutes under the belt for Hinshelwood as gets back after injury. Not quite at his best as yet but led the press superbly.

Malick Yalcouye - 8: Great to see him getting into advanced positions and turned in the first goal from Georginio cross/shot. Perhaps a little lucky not to concede a penalty when he tangled with Lewis on 24 minutes. Replaced by Weffer on 85 minutes.

Georginio - 8: really liked his directness early on and always looked to get a shot away. It was his cross/shot that set up Yalcouye's opener. Very nice strike for the second goal and almost scored a third for Brighton but his angled effort found the side netting. Very good from the Frenchman.

Substitutes:

De Cuyper (Hinshelwood, 76) - The Belgian scored his penalty.

Minteh (Gomez, 76) - great to see the Gambian return from injury for his first minutes of the season.

Wieffer (Yalcouye, 81) - Another positive from the night as the Dutchman returns from injury.

O'Riley (Georginio, 81) - The Denmark international netted from the spot.

Dunk (Svoboda, 85) - Really disappointing for the skipper as he missed his spot kick.
