Chichester City at home in play-off places – and glad to be at home at all

Chichester City’s players have been praised for adapting to different challenges after chalking up another Southern League win to maintain their place in the play-off places.

They had to dig in at Frome Town on Saturday – coming from a goal down to lead 3-1 then having to weather a late storm by the hosts.

Emmett Dunn and Brandon Chebby (2) were on target before Frome set up a tense finish. But City held on for a 3-2 success that has left them in seventh spot and only seven points behind leaders Uxbridge.

Two more tough tests come in the next week – with Bath City visiting Oaklands Park on Saturday and City travelling to Chertsey on Tuesday. Bath and Chertsey are the two sides directly above Miles Rutherford’s City in the table.

Coach Darin Killpartrick said they were delighted to claim the points at Frome.

“It was a bizarre game in some ways – it is certainly not the easiest place to go and play,” he told us. “We had to adapt to the conditions and I think they were the most direct team we have played this season.

“Playing out as we like to do was difficult and we went with more pace up top in the second half. By the end we were hanging on. They threw the kitchen sink at us but we held on.”

Killpartrick said it was a great team effort but did single out double goalscorer Chebby for praise. The forward has scored six in his past six appearances and his Frome double came as a substitute.

Killpartrick said: “We’re seeing a lot of improvement in Brandon – he’s a terrific young man who is listening to us as coaches and working hard on his game, which is paying dividends.

“We’re still looking at what we feel his best position is, but he’s going to be an important player to us over the long season.”

Chi had no midweek match this week and Killpartrick said that was a blessing in a hectic spell in which free Tuesday nights were few and far between.

“It’s relentless and we are in a run where we have so many away games. We are currently in a run of seven away trips in ten games and for a small club, that is tough.”

With that in mind City will be glad to be back at home on Saturday to face high-flying Bath City. Killpartrick said: “We have had some fantastically entertaining home games this season, some brilliant football on show. We’d love a big crowd to come and get behind us.”

Curtis Da Costa and James Sweet are City’s main injury worries ahead of the weekend.
