Wick defy elements and red card to beat Little Common

Lee Baldwin’s young Wick side defied wind, rain and a harsh red card to build in their midweek win at Lingfield with a 4-2 win at home to Little Common.

Wick were leading 2-1 through goals from Cavan Gratwick and Joe Bennett when Danny Jordan was dismissed midway through the second period.

But Tom Holland extended the advantage and although the visitors pulled another one back the three points were wrapped up in the closing stages when George Bingham converted a penalty.

“It was really important to build momentum in the back of the win last Wednesday,” said Wick manager Baldwin.

"You often find that after a great result, the next performance doesn’t live up to it but we were much more focused on our attacking play. The result was slightly tarnished by the red card as the referee seemed to book every player for every slight challenge so when a tackle came in which was a good, old-fashioned one in a wet pitch he sent him off.

"To score another two goals with ten men was impressive and so was the way we played which made it look like we still had 11 in the pitch.”

Wick climbed to 12th in the Southern Combination League Premier and Baldwin added: "It’s really easy to forget what a young team we have. Six of the starting lineup were 20 or under. That gives more credit to the players and their achievement as well."
