Horsham Fireworks Night cancelled over severe weather warnings

Horsham Sports Club has cancelled its fireworks night amid concerns over strong winds and heavy rain, with organisers promising full ticket refunds.

The event was due to take place on Saturday, October 24, from 5pm to 8pm. The club said the ‘extremely difficult decision’ followed ‘detailed consultation’ with event partners and the authorities.

In a statement, the HSC Committee and Event Team said: “With severe weather warnings of high winds and heavy rain forecast, we must prioritise the safety of all those attending the event as well as our volunteers, vendors and event team.”

The cancellation comes amid the expected arrival of Storm Austen.

The BBC’s outlook for Friday to Sunday reads: “On Thursday night and into Friday, Storm Austen will bring heavy rain and very strong winds, along with potentially damaging wind gusts, especially along the coasts.

"The winds will ease on Friday night with just a few lingering showers. Wet and windy on Saturday. Heavy rain will move in from the west. Sunday will be breezy with sunny spells and patchy cloud.”

A yellow wind warning was issued for coastal parts of Sussex, including Brighton and Hove and areas of East and West Sussex.

The Met Office said: “Gusts of 50-60 mph are possible and some coastal or exposed areas could see 70mph or more, but at this time there is uncertainty in where the strongest winds will be.”

The warning highlights possible damage to buildings, power cuts and disruption to road, rail, air and ferry services. Flying debris and large waves could also pose a danger to life.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, check travel arrangements and prepare for possible power cuts. People visiting the coast should take care around large waves and exposed areas.

The club said its cancellation decision was made on October 20 using the forecasts and information available, hoping the advance notice would allow people to make alternative arrangements.

“It is with great sadness that we have come to this decision,” organisers said. “Fireworks is one of our biggest annual fundraisers and is enjoyed by so many. This decision has not been taken lightly.”

People who booked through Eventbrite will have their full ticket refunds processed automatically. Anyone who bought tickets directly from the club should take them to the office between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, to receive a refund.

People responding to the announcement expressed disappointment while backing the organisers’ decision.

One wrote on Facebook: “So sorry you have had to do this. I know it is very popular, but sensible decision in view of the forecast.”

Another offered a different take: “Such a shame for everyone involved, but the local dogs will be secretly delighted!”

Others highlighted the event’s importance to the club, with one describing the cancellation as ‘very sad news given the essential fundraising this brings to the club’.

Another disappointed commenter wrote: “Noooo I always want to see the fireworks in Horsham.”

The clubhouse will remain open as normal on Saturday, showing two Premier League football matches. HSC members will also receive a complimentary glass of mulled wine.

Organisers said the understanding of ticket holders was ‘greatly appreciated’.
