As winter approaches, many people across our community are quietly worrying about how they will make ends meet. Colder weather means higher heating bills, Christmas brings extra costs, and for households already stretched, even a small increase can tip the balance.

Higher wholesale gas prices, driven by the conflict in the Middle East, pushed the energy price cap up by 4% on 1 October. Your bill will depend on your usage and tariff, but for people counting every penny it is another pressure they could do without. If you’re struggling to pay, we urge you to let your supplier know early.

At Chichester District Foodbank, we see the effect of this every day. A food parcel can be a lifeline, but it doesn’t address why someone couldn’t afford the essentials in the first place. That’s why everyone who comes to us is offered further help through our network of partners, including local organisations who can check that they’re receiving all the financial help available.

Independent Age estimates that 1.37 million older people in England are missing out on Council Tax Reduction, leaving £1.7 billion unclaimed. Working families and people in work may also qualify for benefits, childcare support or help with their council tax.

People often tell us that the benefits system can feel confusing, and asking for help isn’t always easy, but you don’t have to work it out alone. Chichester District Council’s Supporting You team can help you check what you’re entitled to, and Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice offers free, independent advice.

We’re also helping with energy costs. On 10 November, the LEAP team will join our weekly wellbeing space at our Chichester centre, over a shared lunch, to offer advice on cutting bills and finding further help.

If you’re not sure where to start, please do reach out for support. You may be able to get more help than you realise, and you’ll always find a warm welcome at our food bank.
