Burgess Hill 4th XI delivered an excellent all-round team performance to secure a well-deserved 4-1 victory over Southwick 2nd XI, combining patient attacking play, hard-working midfield performances and a determined defensive display.

The opening stages saw Burgess Hill settle into the game quickly, moving the ball confidently and creating several promising opportunities. Southwick defended well and remained organised, making Hill work hard for every chance despite enjoying much of the early possession.
The breakthrough finally arrived after 20 minutes following a superb flowing move. Ginette Read crossed the ball from the left to Becs Marriner on the right, who returned it across goal to Izzy on the left. Izzy controlled well and calmly slotted past the goalkeeper to give Hill a deserved 1-0 lead.

The defence played a key role throughout the first half. Sarah Bailey at right back, Ali Gilham at centre back and Jo Richardson at left back were quick to close down attackers and made several important interceptions, while Wendy Caddye swept up calmly behind them whenever Southwick looked to break forward. Their clear hit-outs and composed distribution repeatedly relieved pressure and turned defence into attack. Behind them, goalkeeper Grace Mortimer stayed alert and communicated well, helping to keep Southwick at bay.
The midfield also worked relentlessly. Livy made a number of strong runs down the left, carrying the ball forward and providing an important attacking outlet, while Gillian Branagan controlled large periods through the middle with her energy and intelligent passing. Izzy spent much of the match in midfield, helping link play between defence and attack while creating space for teammates further forward. On the right, Mia covered huge areas of the pitch and was a constant threat whenever she drove forward with the ball.
Although Hill continued to threaten throughout the first half, Southwick worked tirelessly to stay in the game and kept the score to 1-0 at half-time.
Burgess Hill came flying out of the blocks after the break and doubled their lead within the first minute. Branagan drove purposefully through midfield before finding Marriner at the top of the D. Marriner crossed towards Cath Donovan at the right post, drawing the goalkeeper across. With the goalkeeper committed, Donovan slipped a perfectly weighted pass across goal for Read to sweep into the net for 2-0.
Southwick responded positively and deserve considerable credit for refusing to let their heads drop. Their attacking play began to ask more questions of the Hill defence and they earned a succession of short corners through sustained pressure in the attacking third.
Hill defended the majority of these corners superbly. Bailey, Gilham, Richardson and Caddye worked tirelessly to close down shots, make crucial blocks and clear danger, while Mortimer remained dependable in goal. However, Southwick's persistence was eventually rewarded when they managed to convert one of their short corners to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
With the game still competitive entering the final stages, Hill finished strongly to put the result beyond doubt.
There were strong performances all over the pitch, with Toni Frier making a valuable contribution on the right side of the forward line whenever called upon, helping maintain pressure on the Southwick defence.
The third goal came when Mia produced a brilliant run down the right, carrying the ball into the top of the D before delivering a perfectly weighted cross to Izzy, who had found space on the left side. Izzy took her chance confidently, firing past the goalkeeper for her second goal of the afternoon.
The final goal came from a well-executed short corner. Donovan injected the ball to Marriner at the top of the D, and Marriner unleashed a powerful straight strike that flew through the Southwick defence and into the back of the net to complete the scoring at 4-1.
While the scoreline favoured Hill, Southwick deserve praise for their determination, organisation and attacking intent throughout the match. Their ability to win multiple short corners and keep competing until the final whistle ensured the contest remained hard-fought.
For Burgess Hill, it was a genuine team effort built on solid defending, energetic midfield play and clinical finishing when it mattered most.
Player of the Match (Top Banana) went to Sarah Bailey, whose tireless defensive work, crucial tackles, intelligent positioning and countless clearances helped provide the platform for an excellent Burgess Hill victory.
