Around 18 months ago, W. Bro Ron Hurstwaite of Gordon Lodge, which meets in Bognor, suffered a heart attack and was admitted to St Richard’s Hospital for urgent care. Following a successful operation, Ron began his recovery under the guidance of the hospital’s dedicated rehabilitation team, who supported him through the crucial stages of regaining his strength and confidence.

Deeply impressed by the care and commitment shown by the team, Ron was inspired to give something back. Determined to help others facing similar challenges, he set his sights on becoming a volunteer within the very department that had supported him.

After completing the necessary training, Ron has now joined St Richard’s Hospital as a volunteer, working alongside the rehabilitation team that once cared for him. His role sees him offering support and encouragement to patients beginning their own recovery journeys, drawing on his personal experience to connect with and reassure others.

Staff at the hospital have praised Ron’s dedication and positive attitude, noting the unique perspective he brings to the role. His journey from patient to volunteer is seen as a powerful example of how lived experience can inspire and uplift others.

A photograph accompanying the story shows Ron ready to assist the team, marking the next chapter in his journey and highlighting his commitment to giving back.

Stories like Ron’s underline the lasting impact of compassionate care and the difference individuals can make within their communities.
